| NL inside pitch • Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano will miss his next scheduled start because of shoulder trouble and will undergo an MRI exam today. He left Wednesday night's game at Tampa Bay because of discomfort in his right shoulder and was examined Thursday in Chicago by team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo. Zambrano, 8-3 with a 3.13 ERA for the NL Central leaders, was set to pitch Tuesday night at home against Baltimore. | AL inside pitch • John McLaren was fired Thursday as manager of the Seattle Mariners, who began the season with playoff aspirations and now have the worst record in the major leagues at 25-47. Bench coach Jim Riggleman will run the club for the rest of the season. The Mariners made the announcement three days after general manager Bill Bavasi was fired. The revamped Mariners expected to reach their first postseason since 2001. Instead, they are on pace to become the first team to lose 100 games with a $100 million player payroll. |
