Rivalry super regional, anyone? Sun, 25 May 2008 21:26:49 -0700Even on the eve of the NCAA Baseball Tournament pairings announcement, Baseball America continues to project a possible Arizona State-Arizona super regional. While that makes sense in some ways, you've got to think ASU coach Pat Murphy would use whatever pull he has on the NCAA baseball committee to keep the in-state rivals away from each other until the College World Series. For some time, Baseball America has been projecting Arizona to be a No. 2 seed at a UC Irvine regional and pitting the winner of the Irvine regional against the winner of an ASU regional in a best-of-3 super regional. Irvine didn't land a regional Sunday so nowBaseball America has Irvine coming to ASU as a No. 2 seed along with Alabama and Rider. Baseball America now puts UA as a No. 2 seed at Long Beach State with that winner meeting the ASU winner in a super regional. If any of that comes true, there are multiple story lines but none greater than a possible ASU-Arizona super regional. The rivals split four games this season with UA winning two of three in the just completed Pac-10 series. The ASU and UA postseason history is limited to two famous games at the 1976 College World Series: 7-6 ASU win in the opener and 5-1 UA win in the semifinals. The Wildcats went on to beat Eastern Michigan and win the first of their three national titles. The Sun Devils are five-time national champs. Also ASU split with Irvine at the 2007 College World Series, being eliminated in its loss to the Anteaters. This season, the Sun Devils beat Irvine, now coached by former USC coach Mike Gillespie, 11-1 on March 23. Five Pac-10 teams -- ASU, Stanford, UCLA, UA and California -- are expected to make the 64-team NCAA field on Monday. Oregon State swept Pacific to close the regular season and might get in on the strength of being the two-time defending national champion. Murphy, in his first year on the selection committee in 2007, lobbied on behalf of his friend Oregon State coach Pat Casey only for Casey's Beavers to beat ASU in a critical winner's bracket game at the College World Series. The Pac-10 had a record six NCAA qualifiers in 1992 when the conference still was split into two divisions. Baseball America thinks six will get in again. |
